Charlene’s Project

In Girls’ Brigade we collect 1 and 2 p’s which are donated, at the end of each Session to a designated Charity which last Session was   “Charlene’s Project”.  We first heard about Charlene’s Project from our fellow Officer Linzi McCartney.  Linzi is a teacher in Armagh Royal where Charlene Barr, the founder of this charity, was a pupil. Charlene was born with Cystic Fibrosis but she didn’t let this put her off helping others.

She created “Charlene’s Project” to build a school near the Uganda capital of Kampala after visiting the country in 2008. Charlene visited the district of Maya and discovered the Hidden Treasures primary school which was one small room made of mud and sticks.  On her return home, she created the charity with an initial fundraising target of £70,000 to build a bigger and better school for the kids.  However, so successful was her campaigning that she raised almost double the target.  Sadly Charlene passed away just days before building work began on the African school project she created.  Her family is carrying on the Project in her name.

A donation of £100 was sent from our Company to the charity and below is a letter from Janice Barr thanking us for our donation.

Dear Margaret

It truly was a blessing to get the letter and cheque for £100 from the girls in your Girls' Brigade for Charlene's Project What a brilliant way to raise money by collecting pennies We don't miss it out of our purses and yet those very same pennies make such an incredible difference to the children out in Uganda Please pass on our thanks to all the girls

I know that it is the end of the season for you now but come next session if you want us to come down to the Girls 'Brigade and tell them what their £100 achieved out in Uganda, I would be more than glad to come and share with them.

Cannot tell you what it means to have your help in what we are doing Thanks to all concerned

With warmest regards

Janice Barr
